After a cool start to the summer, temperatures and humidity have finally skyrocketed to uncomfortable levels. Forecasters expect the the searing heat to continue through part of the weekend. To combat the weather, air conditioners have been running on full blast in homes, businesses and on farms all over the state. Because of this, Delaware Electric Cooperative has issued Beat the Peak alerts for both today and tomorrow, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The price of energy increases as demand for electricity increases. When the price of energy is expected to be very high, DEC issues a Beat the Peak alert. If you’ve signed up for a Beat the Peak in-home indicator, the yellow light will light up when an alert period is approaching. When it’s time to conserve, the red light on the indicator will light and remain on until the alert time is over.

This helps members by lowering the Co-op’s cost for power. Because DEC is a not-for-profit utility, the money that the Co-op saves is passed on to you in the form of affordable rates. The Beat the Peak program is a voluntary program, which benefits all members. Since 2008, the program has saved members over $22 million. You can sign up by visiting www.beatthepeak.coop and filling out the online form. Once submitted, a free Beat the Peak in-home indicator and two LED bulbs will be sent to you. Simply plug the indicator into an outlet and you’re ready to start conserving. You can also give us a call at (855) 332-9090 with any questions or concerns.
