2015 is off to a cold start! Temperatures the first week of January plummeted into the single digits across the northern part of DEC’s service territory. The first snowstorm of the season also hit our area on January 6th, dropping only a dusting of snow—enough though to cause several car accidents. An SUV hit one of our utility poles on Westville Road, west of Dover, resulting in a power outage.

That same day, a curious raccoon climbed one of our poles west of Seaford and made contact with our power lines. The critter knocked out power to more than 2,000 members during one of the coldest nights of the year. Because of the darkness, linemen weren’t able to see the raccoon on top of the electrical equipment and it took some time for power to be restored.

As always, we appreciated our members’ patience during the outage as crews worked hard to find the cause and restore power. Remember, you can always use the Co-op app to report an outage. Just search "DEC Connect" in the app store on your phone!
