Russ Notar will be at Browseabout Books on Thursday, August 10, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to sign copies of his memoir, “Journeys of Hope and Reality”. This book features Notar’s international work experiences on behalf of cooperatives in Africa, El Salvador, Indonesia, and the Philippines, among other world-wide locations.

The idea of cooperation is not a new concept in the United States. The early settlers, who came to our country, cleared the land, planted crops, built log cabins and barns and worked together to raise their families and build a livelihood, which eventually became the United States of America! They proved that by working together, and helping one another when the need arose, everyone could share in a better life.

The cooperative model is currently working in Sussex County where the Delaware Electric Cooperative is serving thousands of residents by providing electric service at an affordable price each and every day. Community-based credit unions, which are also cooperatives, provide financial services and products to thousands of Delaware residents.

In his book, Notar discusses how the work-sharing concept has benefitted villages in El Salvador by developing organic coffee cooperatives which grow, harvest and market coffee on a world-wide scale. In Indonesia, the cooperative model was introduced in the production and marketing of vanilla beans, the earnings of which have provided coop members with a better life and educational opportunities for their children.

“Journeys of Hope and Reality” makes a perfect gift or souvenir, especially for someone who enjoys reading about international adventures written by someone who lived them! Notar will sign and inscribe books, answer questions, and share several of his “close shaves” on August 10 at Browseabout.
