Delaware Electric Cooperative takes the security and proper handling of member data seriously and makes every effort possible to safeguard that data. The Co-op’s cybersecurity department has advanced programs designed to ensure the security of our members’ personal data. These initiatives are driven by DEC’s commitment to implement cybersecurity standards and practices with a track record of preventing penetration by bad actors.

Member names, addresses, emails, phone numbers, payment and billing information are kept on record ensuring accurate processing of member bills and energy use – all of this data is necessary for utility operations. Member social security numbers or driver’s license numbers are requested to run initial credit checks that determine member deposits. Members who opt out of providing that information are asked to pay a deposit. DEC uses member email addresses and phone numbers to communicate important service and fiduciary information to members on a regular basis.

Member email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, customer numbers and usage data are securely shared with necessary third parties for the administration of annual Co-op board elections, member surveys, member charitable assistance and collections. No member data is ever sold to third parties.

DEC does keep sensitive personal data on file for members who request to be added to DEC’s life support list. The database contains information about members with health concerns who require electrical service to power life sustaining equipment. Members with a signed form from a medical provider are added to the list.

Members can view and update the information DEC has on file about them by creating or logging into a DEC SmartHub account, also accessible on the DEC Connect mobile app. Login or create an account HERE. Members can also call DEC to review information the Co-op has on file at 855-332-9090.
