The Delaware Public Archives has dug deep into their collection of over 1.5 million images to again share with Delaware Living a series of photos from the First State’s rich history. This year, the DPA has selected photos from their Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) collection from the early 1930s. During the Great Depression, the federal government created the Civilian Conservation Corps to countermeasure the high unemployment of youth. Eight camps were set up in Delaware located in Lewes, Magnolia, Leipsic, Georgetown, Slaughter Beach, Frederica and Wyoming. One of their main functions was to dig drainage ditches for mosquito control. The CCC also planted trees and built picnic, camping and rest areas still in use today. The work CCC crews performed was strenuous, but there was still occasionally time to relax and drink a keg of beer.
The CCC program was enacted by President Franklin Roosevelt to provide employment for young men during the Great Depression. Men dug ditches, planted trees and built rest areas.
