GREENWOOD, Del. — Delaware Electric Cooperative (DEC) will return $5 million in capital credits to its member-owners this Thanksgiving season, continuing a long-standing tradition of giving back to the people and communities it serves. Seventy-four thousand members will receive capital credits from DEC in November in the form of a credit on their electric bill or as a check in the mail.

Capital credits represent the Cooperative’s margins, or profits, which are returned to members under DEC’s not-for-profit business model. Each time members pay their electric bill, they invest in the cooperative — building equity that allows DEC to maintain, improve and expand the electrical infrastructure powering homes and businesses across Kent and Sussex counties.

President and CEO Rob Book says this return of profits highlights what sets electric cooperatives apart. “Without our members, who own the Co-op, there would be no DEC. Every time they pay their electric bill, they’re helping us strengthen and modernize the system that keeps the lights on and our electric rates among the lowest in the region. Returning capital credits is our way of saying thank you for that partnership and trust.”

Members who received power from DEC in 2013 are now seeing the return on their investment. Current members who were served by DEC in 2013 will see their return as a credit on their November bill. Those who have since moved off DEC lines, but had active accounts in 2013, will receive a check in the mail.

Over the past 20 years, Delaware Electric Cooperative has returned nearly $100 million to its members through capital credits, demonstrating that the cooperative business model puts people first — not profits.

“We’re proud to operate differently from other utilities,” Book says. “Our goal isn’t to generate profits for shareholders — it’s to deliver safe, reliable and affordable power to those we serve.”

As November ushers in a season of gratitude and giving, DEC is proud to give back once again to its members. Members with questions about their capital credit return can call DEC at 855-332-9090 or visit www.delaware.coop.
