DEC Announces Scholarships

Eight high school seniors, whose families are served by Delaware Electric Cooperative, have each earned a $1,000 college scholarship awarded by the Educational Scholarship Foundation of the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives. The Association provides services for the regions’ not-for-profit electric cooperatives. The students were eligible for consideration because their parents are DEC members.

The recipients are:
• Tessa McDonough of Georgetown, a student at Sussex Central High School
• Ashlyn Darling of Camden, a student at Dover High School
• Cesar Juarez Gil of Frankford, a student at Sussex Academy
• Jenna Anger of Bridgeville, a student at Sussex Central High School
• Gabriel Hoffman of Seaford, a student at Sussex Technical High School
• Talia Curcio of Ocean View, a student at Indian River High School
• Britney Martinez Couary of Georgetown, a student at Sussex Central High School
• Madison Johnson of Selbyville, a student at Indian River High School

Johnson received a $1,000 Cook scholarship, generously donated by Delaware Electric Cooperative members Larry and Leslie Cook. The others received $1,000 Worth Hudson scholarships, named in honor of Hudson, the Foundation’s first chairman. 

Recipients were chosen based on a competitive screening process that considers financial need (40 percent), academic achievement (40 percent) and community involvement (20 percent). Applicants must be a senior graduating from either high school or home school in 2020.

They must also provide evidence of their acceptance into a college or university. These grants can be used to pay for tuition, fees and books.
  
This year, the Foundation awarded 57 Hudson scholarships of $1,000 each to students who live in areas served by electric cooperatives in Delaware, Maryland and Virginia. Since 2001, the Foundation has provided approximately 780 scholarships totaling more than $740,000 to aspiring college students, as well as to the next generation of electric lineworkers.

The Foundation is funded through tax-deductible donations and bequests from individuals, proceeds from benefit fundraising events and CoBank’s Sharing Success Program.
