DEC’s Beat the Peak Program Surpasses $50 Million in Power Cost Savings
Oct. 22, 2026 | Press Releases
GREENWOOD, Del. - Delaware Electric Cooperative (DEC) announced that its Beatthe Peak program has saved members more than $50 million since its launch in 2008. The voluntary initiative has saved members $4.5 million in 2026 alone, helping theCooperative continue to offer some of the lowest electric rates in the region.
The Beat the Peak program encourages members to reduce electricity use during times of peak demand, when the cost of purchasing power is highest. By working together to conserve energy during these periods, DEC and its members have saved over $50 million in power costs.
“Reaching $50 million in savings is an important milestone for our Cooperative and the members we serve,” said Rob Book, DEC president and CEO. “Beat the Peakcontinues to serve as a significant member benefit.”
DEC typically issues Beat the Peak alerts during the hottest days of summer, when increased electricity use can lead to higher wholesale power costs. During alerts, members are asked to voluntarily conserve energy by taking simple steps, such as raising their thermostats a few degrees and delaying the use of major appliances, including dryers and dishwashers.
Members receive Beat the Peak alerts through the DEC Connect mobile app, email and automated phone calls. Alerts are also posted on DEC’s social media pages. Additionally, bill credits are offered to members who sign up to allow the Co-op to make automatic adjustments to smart thermostats during alert periods.
“By working together, our members have helped us avoid millions of dollars in power costs, allowing us to continue offering lower electric rates,” Book said. “We’re grateful for members’ continued participation in this partnership.”
As electricity demand continues to increase across the country, programs like Beat thePeak remain important tools for keeping power costs affordable. DEC’s innovative program is used by more than 100 not-for-profit utilities nationwide.
As a member-owned, not-for-profit electric cooperative, DEC remains focused on providing reliable, affordable power to its members.
