In 1936, a group of farmers from Kent and Sussex counties were faced with a choice: continue living their lives without electricity or figure out a way to power themselves. At the time, for-profit utilities did not see the benefit in electrifying rural communities. Thankfully for future generations, the group chose to work together, pooling their money and resources to lay the groundwork for what would become Delaware Electric Cooperative.

Just like our farming forefathers, the Co-op prides itself on taking the initiative to empower the lives of those we serve, and utilizing innovative ideas and technology to ensure our service continues to be as reliable and as affordable as possible. Another benefit to being a Co-op member? Not only are our rates the lowest in the state, but you actually get money back in the form of capital credits! Each year, DEC returns margins to those on our lines, as a return on the investment you make in us each time you pay your electric bill. In this way — and many others — we honor our legacy of prioritizing the people and places we power.

For almost 90 years, DEC has been putting our members first, and we intend to continue to do so for years to come.
