Follow These Rules for a Safe Planting Season

Affordability, reliability, sustainability — these are three important metrics DEC uses to measure the success of our service, but above all of these, safety is our top priority. No matter the job, doing it safely, as well as efficiently, is always at the forefront of our employees' minds, and the Co-op encourages our members to take the same approach when completing their own projects.
With many people planting their gardens this month, make sure that you are not planting too close to electrical equipment, such as transformers or power pedestals (pictured above). Vegetation is restricted within ten feet (10') in front of equipment, as well as within five feet (5') on either side and behind equipment. These same distance requirements apply when planting at the equipment's corners.
Not only does this clearance zone protect our employees from potential hazards and help them restore power faster, but it also protects you from potentially coming in contact with electricity. Whenever digging is required, members must call 811 before they dig. A locator will be assigned to your property to mark the location of underground utility lines, preventing harm from coming to the equipment, and — more importantly — to you.
Follow these rules to ensure your spring planting season is safe!
