How It Works: Understanding Capital Credits
Nov. 4, 2026 | Co-op News
As a not-for-profit electric cooperative, DEC stands apart from traditional investor-owned utilities, offering its members unique benefits aligned with the cooperative business model.
One of the most valuable of these benefits is the return of the Co-op’s margins, known as capital credits, to those it serves. Think of capital credits as a return on your investment in DEC. Each time you pay your electric bill, you are investing in the Co-op’s ability to not only repair and maintain its system but also improve it. You’re supporting the construction of new lines, the purchase of new equipment and the use of innovative technology to help increase reliability and maintain affordability. As a member-owner, you are entitled to DEC’s margins.
Every member is eligible to receive capital credits, and returns typically begin 10 to 20 years after joining the Co-op. This approach helps recognize the contributions of long-standing members while giving newer members time to build equity in DEC. Current members will receive their capital credits as a credit on their November bill. Former members who are no longer served by DEC are also eligible to receive capital credits for the years they were served by the
Co-op, and will receive their return as a check in the mail.
As the season of giving begins, our team is proud to be giving back capital credits to our members — the people who make our work of keeping the lights on possible. We are grateful for your continued support this month and all year long.
