Hurricane Season Is Here: How You Can Best Prepare
May. 28, 2026 | Co-op News
After the extreme winter that DEC's service territory experienced, we can understand why storms — and especially hurricanes — might not be a welcome topic for many. Still, seasons change, and with them comes the potential for severe weather. Hurricane season began June 1st, and DEC encourages members to be prepared.
It's important to have a plan in place should severe weather strike. Creating an emergency preparedness plan with those in your household can help you be ready in the event that storms cause extended power outages. Include information such as meeting locations and up-to-date contact information should you become separated. Stay informed during outages by downloading the DEC Connect app on your smartphone or device.
Members should also purchase or assemble an emergency preparedness kit. Kits should include — at a minimum — non-perishable food items, water (one gallon per person, per day), first aid supplies, extra clothing, personal hygiene items and important personal documents.
If you use a portable generator, ensure the transfer switch is properly engaged to prevent electricity from backfeeding onto Co-op lines, which can pose a life-threatening hazard to crews restoring service. Members should also stay at least 30 feet away from downed poles or power lines, as they could still be energized.
