The Importance of Tree Trimming
Aug. 27, 2025 | Co-op News
To maintain reliability and provide the quality service our members have come to depend on, Delaware Electric Cooperative’s system requires regular care and maintenance. One method we use to ensure it continues operating efficiently is to clear our poles and equipment of trees, plants and brush that have grown too close, preventing our employees from safe and easy access. DEC performs routine clearing as part of our comprehensive tree trimming program, also known as vegetation management.
When left unchecked, vegetation can grow into or even fall onto power lines, causing outages and sometimes bringing down utility poles – especially during major weather events. The Co-op's program enlists the help of local contract crews to clear trees and shrubs away from power lines along roughly 20% of our system annually. This schedule allows us to cover our entire service area every five years.
Members can also play a part in helping our team limit the impact of vegetation on our system. When planting on your property, DEC requires members to never plant trees directly under power lines. Even small trees grow over time, so it’s best to plant all trees at least 25 feet from overhead lines. For taller-growing trees, aim for at least 40 feet of distance from Co-op equipment.
Working together, we can keep our system clear of hazardous vegetation, and allow DEC to continue to provide safe, reliable and cost-effective electric service.
