Co-ops are all about people joining forces to help each other, and at DEC, collaboration is helping to keep rates affordable. Through our Beat the Peak program, members conserve energy during specified peak alert times. They’re not only helping the Co-op keep rates affordable for themselves, but for everyone on our lines.

When the cost to produce power is at its highest, DEC will issue a peak alert to members. During this time, members are encouraged to save energy to help keep costs low. No matter how much energy you regularly use, there are a variety of ways to save, including delaying the use of major appliances during peak alert times, grilling outdoors instead of cooking on the stove, adjusting your thermostat by a few degrees, and more. Members with Wi-Fi-enabled thermostats or electric vehicles (EVs) can even earn money in the form of billing credits when they save, by signing up for DEC’s Beat the Peak with Thermostats and Beat the Peak with EVs programs. For convenience, members can download our Beat the Peak app onto their smart devices to receive peak alerts as soon as they are issued, as well as learn the best ways to save.

Since 2008, Beat the Peak has saved members over $42 million dollars. When you participate, you’re doing something that’s good for the grid and great for your wallet!
