Manage Winter Heating Costs
Dec. 23, 2025 | Co-op News
The longest stretch of arctic cold and below-freezing temperatures in nearly 10 years is expected to lead to increased energy use and higher electric bills in January and February. During very cold weather, HVAC systems — especially heat pumps — operate less efficiently and use significantly more energy to keep homes warm. While Delaware Electric Cooperative continues to provide the lowest electric rates in Delaware, increased energy consumption can still come as a surprise. To help, we’ve put together tips and resources to help you better manage winter heating costs.
If you are having difficulty paying your electric bill, please call us at 855-332-9090, and we will connect you with agencies that may be able to help.
Colder temperatures can put a strain on your home’s heating system, causing it to work less efficiently. Have your HVAC system serviced annually and change the air filters regularly based on the manufacturers recommendations. It is also important that members caulk and seal spaces or gaps around doors and windows to prevent warm air from escaping. When you’re at home, keep the thermostat as low as you can while still being comfortable. Every degree you lower the thermostat can reduce energy use by roughly three percent. When you’re away or asleep, lower the thermostat by a few degrees. Members who use a heat pump should keep their thermostat set at a constant temperature to ensure efficient operation.
