Ghosts and ghouls are common conversation topics this time of year, but what you should really be talking about are phantoms — as in the potential impact of phantom load on your monthly electric bill and how you can guard against it. Phantom load occurs when devices that remain plugged in continue to draw electricity, even when they are powered off. While it may seem like only a minor amount, it all adds up. Don’t panic, though! Protecting your home from phantom load is easy once you know how to do it.

A simple first step is to unplug nonessential devices when they are not being used. Popular phantom load haunts include device chargers, gaming systems and entertainment systems. Investing in smart power strips is also a great defense against the drain of phantom load. When used, one of the outlets serves as the “master” that receives power all the time. The others are turned off. When the device connected to the master outlet turns on, the rest of the outlets will receive power, too. Members can also use DEC’s online Phantom Energy Calculator to better understand phantom load’s impact on their home energy use.
