During the week of June 29, our members were impacted by the most significant heat wave our area has experienced since 2011. Just as extreme cold often leads to increased energy use and higher electric bills in the winter, prolonged high temperatures in the summer can also impact our members’ usage and costs. When temperatures rise, your HVAC system works harder to keep your home cool and comfortable, meaning it requires more energy and operates less efficiently. You can save energy — and reduce energy costs — by taking the following steps:

  1. Put Summer Energy-Saving Tips into Practice: If you haven’t done so already, schedule an appointment for your HVAC system’s annual service. This will ensure it is running as efficiently as possible. Checking and replacing air conditioning filters as needed is another helpful step — doing so prevents dust and dirt build up from blocking airflow. Just as you caulk and seal gaps around doors and windows in winter to keep warm air in, doing so in the summer can help keep warm air out. Prevent the cooler air inside your home from escaping by sealing or weatherstripping around these areas. Members with programmable thermostats can save energy by scheduling their thermostats to increase by a few degrees when they know they will be away from home.
