It’s hard to believe that we are already halfway through winter, but that doesn’t mean that we're finished with cold weather. If you’re looking for ways to save energy and money on your electric bill, try one — or all — of the following energy-saving tips in your home this month.

Start simple: keep your home warm without using additional energy by opening your curtains or blinds and allowing daylight to heat your home. This tactic is even more effective when applied to south-facing windows. If you notice gaps or spaces around your windows or external doors, make sure to caulk and seal them to prevent warm air from escaping. Similarly, if you have a fireplace, ensure warm air stays inside your home by closing the damper when it's not in use.

Adjusting your thermostat is another great solution for keeping your energy usage and costs affordable. When you're at home, lower your thermostat by a few degrees — enough to reduce your energy usage while still taking your comfort into consideration. For every degree members lower their thermostats, they can reduce their energy usage by about 3%. If you use a heat pump in your home, keep your thermostat set to a moderate setting.

While not a cold-weather-specific tip, unplugging devices you're not actively using can also help you save energy. Some of these items — such as chargers, gaming consoles, televisions and small appliances — draw energy referred to as "phantom power," even when they are turned off.
