Save Energy — And Money — as Temperatures Begin to Rise
Mar. 24, 2025 | Co-op News
It's never too early to start preparing for the warmer weather that comes with late spring and summertime. Save electricity — and lower your electricity bill — by putting the following tips from Energy.gov to use this season!
Get started conserving energy with an energy audit. DEC members can request an energy audit through Energize Delaware's Home Performance with Energy Star® for Homeowners program for as low as $50. To learn more, visit delaware.coop and select "energy savings" from the menu options. On average, an energy audit can decrease energy costs by at least 20 percent.
When considering ways to save energy, check your thermostat. During warmer months, turn your thermostat up a few degrees when you leave the house to save electricity. When you return, lower the temperature to a setting that is comfortable.
Maintaining your HVAC system is also essential to conserving energy. Schedule routine maintenance for your system to ensure it is operating efficiently. How you operate your appliances such as washers and dishwashers can also play a part in helping you save energy. For the most efficient use, only use them when you have a full load of clothes or dishes to wash.
Finally, caulk or apply weatherstripping around doors and windows to help keep warm air out and cool air in. This will reduce the amount of stress on your HVAC system.
DEC works hard to keep our rates the lowest in the state, and taking these simple steps can help you save even more money on your electric bills!
