Save Energy and Money with These Fall Tips!

Many of us are looking forward to fall returning to our service territory. Still, cooler temperatures present their own challenges when it comes to saving energy and saving money on electric bills. Use the following energy tips from the Department of Energy to conserve electric and help keep energy bills affordable.
One of the simplest steps you can take is to harness the power of the sun to keep your home warm. Keep curtains on the south-facing side of your home open during the day to allow sunlight in. This will add natural warmth to indoor spaces. Next, check around windows and door frames for any holes or space. If you find any, apply caulk or weatherstripping to help keep warm air in. If you still feel a draft after weatherizing windows, apply insulating drapes to help prevent warm air from escaping. Another option to help reduce energy use during the cooler season is to adjust your thermostat. When you’re in your home, lower your thermostat to the coolest temperature that is comfortable for you. For members with heat pumps, you will want to maintain a moderate temperature setting, or install a programmable thermostat designed for heat pumps. When you leave your home or are asleep, turning down your thermostat can help you save up to 10 percent on your energy bill annually.
With all these tips to help you save energy at your disposal this fall, you can enjoy all your favorite autumn activities without the stress of high electric bills hanging over your head. Build a bonfire, bob for apples or whatever suits your fall fancy, and do it all while saving energy!
