Ways to Save — How Members Can Beat the Peak!
May. 29, 2025 | Co-op News
One of the great things about DEC’s Beat the Peak program is that it’s easy for anyone on our lines to participate. With a variety of ways to save, the Co-op has ensured it is simple for all members, regardless of how you choose to conserve.
For members with Wi-Fi-enabled thermostats, participating in DEC’s Beat the Peak with Thermostats program is a great way to not only save energy, but to also earn billing credits when you do. By allowing the remote adjustment of your thermostat by a few degrees during peak alert times, you can earn a $25 initial credit toward your monthly electric bill, as well as a $5 monthly billing credit throughout the summer season (June through September). Similarly, members with electric vehicles (EVs) who sign up for our Optiwatt charging program — and refrain from charging their EVs during peak alert times — will also receive an initial and monthly billing credit.
This year, DEC is also introducing the Beat the Peak Electric Rate. For those with the flexibility to choose when they use power, shifting your usage to off-peak hours (5 a.m. — 3 p.m.) or super off-peak hours (11 p.m. — 5 a.m.) can lower your bill by up to 8 percent. While the opportunity to save with this rate is greater, it’s important to recognize that members with large usage levels may not benefit from making the switch.
