As Delaware’s only not-for-profit electric cooperative, DEC is always looking for ways to keep rates affordable. In 2008, our Cooperative launched the Beat the Peak program. The idea behind the program was simple: when the price of energy was high during the hottest summer days, we asked members to voluntarily conserve electricity. This lowered the overall cost of power that all members paid. This program was one of the reasons our rates have been among the lowest in the region for more than a decade. Since 2008, Beat the Peak has saved members more than $38 million! As energy prices have risen over the past two years, the program is more important than ever. Please consider downloading the free Beat the Peak app on your mobile device so you can be the first to know when it is time to conserve. You can also visit beatthepeak.coop to sign up to receive emails when alerts are issued. DEC also always posts alert times on its Facebook and Twitter pages. During Beat the Peak alerts, consider raising your thermostat a few degrees, delay the use of major appliances like washers and dryers and consider cooking outside on the grill. If you have a Wi-Fi-enabled thermostat or an electric vehicle charger, you may also be eligible to receive billing credits when you conserve during alert times.
